Advanced Infrared Camera Keeps Soldiers Farther From Dangerous Targets VIDEO
about 2 hours ago - No comments
An advanced camera could help save the lives of U.S. soldiers in combat. The new camera was developed to navigate dangerous war conditions — darkness, bad weather and obscure surroundings. The camera was developed as a part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) AWARE program — or the Advanced Wide Field of View Architectures for Image Reconstruction and Exploitation. The goal is to continue to provide more capable tools for soldiers to use that overcome size, weight and power barriers. “Increased standoff distance can help protect warfighter lives,” DARPA said in a statement. “This is especially true when an infrared scope is needed for nighttime action.” The new infrared camera is lightweight, so it can be used in many situations on the ground and air. The camera can be used for target identifications, multiple target tracking and surveillance of a scene. The new gadget utilizes advanced infrared capabilities to help U.S. war fighters see more clearly than other cameras have allowed. Soldiers on the ground can use the camera instead of trekking into unknown territories to determine what’s ahead. The camera can be used day or night in any weather conditions. Tell us in the comments what you think of this new imaging technology. Can you think of other technological advances that can be used to keep soldiers safe? More About: DARPA , U.S. Military , Video

Google to Launch TV Service
about 6 hours ago - No comments
Google is looking to get into the paid TV business. The company filed an application last week to provide video service to residents of Kansas City, Mo., according to The Wall Street Journal . If approved, the service could launch as soon as a month from now, according to the article, which cites a “media executive currently involved in negotiations to license channels to the service.” Offerings in the video package would include live TV as well as on-demand and online access to TV channels, according to the report, which was based on an earlier article by The New York Post . The source told the WSJ that Google plans to look beyond the Kansas City market and into other areas where Verizon’s Fiber Optic Services (FIOS). Controlling the pipes to TV subscribers would offer Google a new revenue stream. Reps from Google could not be reached for comment. The Kansas City application coincides with another request to put a satellite antenna farm near the company’s data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. That addition could allow Google to receive movies and TV shows that could be bundled with a new Internet service in Kansas City that promises to be up to 100 times faster than the average Internet connection. Google chose Kansas City for its ultra-fast service last March. Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., beat out about 1,000 other municipalities for that honor. That fiber-optic-based Internet service is expected to go live there this summer. This isn’t the first time that Google’s ambitious plans for TV service have been exposed. The Wall Street Journal also reported in November that Google was in talks with Disney, Time Warner and Discovery Communications about providing content for its fiber-optic based video service in those cities. Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Announces Social Media-Driven Music TV Channel
about 10 hours ago - No comments
Sean “Diddy” Combs took to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook this week to announce the launch of REVOLT TV — a new socially connected music and news-driven cable channel coming to the Comcast-NBC network in 2013. Combs, the founder and CEO of Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group and hip-hop artist, says he wants to connect music makers to music lovers. It’s fitting that the TV network using social networks to reach viewers would turn to YouTube to broadcast initial plans. The television channel will deliver music videos, live performances and music news. Social media will drive audience interaction with the network and featured artists. “REVOLT is the first channel created entirely from the ground up in this new era of social media” Combs said in a statement. “We’re building this platform for artists to reach an extraordinary number of people in a completely different way.” Combs has taken to Twitter in recent days to accept congratulations from fellow entertainers — and fellow Twitter heavy hitters — like Rihanna, Busta Rhymes, Ashton Kutcher and Ryan Seacrest. Oh shit bro! You have your own channel??! #ILL #REVOLTNavy RT @ iamdiddy : MUSIC IS MY LIFE #REVOLT -> Bit.ly/diddyrevolt — Rihanna (@rihanna) February 22, 2012 @ iamdiddy VERY PROUD OF U AND THE LAUNCH OF UR OWN CHANNEL BIG HOMIE!!! #REVOLT !! — Busta Rhymes (@BusaBusss) February 22, 2012 congrats to my boy @ iamdiddy on the new TV channel #Revolt !! bit.ly/diddyrevolt — ashton kutcher (@aplusk) February 22, 2012 congrats @ iamdiddy I love ur hustle — Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest) February 21, 2012 He has also used the social network to clear things up about REVOLT. He stated it is “not a black network,” but rather all about music. REVOLT TV will be one of the four new minority-owned independent networks to debut on Comcast between July 2012 and January 2014. Another big name joining Combs on television is NBA hall of famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson, whose channel Aspire will deliver programs geared toward African-American families. In the YouTube video, Combs mentioned watching MTV, HBO and BET growing up, networks now considered competition in entertainment television. An invitation has been extended to other major cable networks including Time Warner, DirectTV and Cablevision to carry the new channel. Tell us if you will tune into REVOLT TV. 8 Ways Pinterest Is Inspiring Projects
about 10 hours ago - No comments
How is Pinterest inpsiring you to take action? As Pinterest looks to turn the corner from buzz-worthy startup to mainstream social network, everyone seems to be talking about it. Most unique about it, though, is the way it inspires people to pin project-related content, be it recipes, design ideas, or wedding plans. But is it compelling people to actually create based on what they pin? For our latest collaboration with CNN iReport , we asked you to tell us how you’re turning pins into projects . We love social media, but we also love when online and offline experiences converge. We wanted to know how people are using Pinterest to find and organize things that give them creative inspiration – and then how they execute these projects in real life. For those who have yet to join (the site is invite-only), Pinterest is a curatorial site that calls itself a “virtual pinboard,” which allows users to capture and organize images from the web. The still growing site has captured the zeitgeist of the social web in early 2012. It is now over 10 million members strong, and receives 12 million monthly unique visitors. SEE ALSO: The 10 Most-Followed Brands on Pinterest We received stories of people baking, crafting, and designing a home office. We even heard from a mother who took her two sons on a jet-powered tour of downtown Detroit. Here is a look at some of the best ways people are using pins to create projects. You can also see the featured submissions chosen by iReport in their post . Baby Blankets Lissables is an active member of Pinterest and uses the site to pin items she has sewn, quilted, and crochet. Lissables said she taught herself to sew an entire baby blanket (right) by finding tutorials on the site. Click here to view this gallery. Are you using Pinterest to do projects but missed our call for submissions? Let us know how in the comments. Will You Be Twitter’s 500 Millionth User? UPDATED
about 13 hours ago - No comments
Update: Shortly after 1 p.m. ET, Twitter hit 500 million users, according to Twopcharts.com. Naturally, the analyst company is on to the next benchmark — the countdown to 600 million registered users. The estimated time until the next Twitter celebration is only 108 days away. There were an estimated 922,000 users accounted for in the past 24 hours. Twitter may hit a huge landmark on Wednesday — welcoming the 500 millionth user to the social network at approximately 3 p.m. EST. The countdown is on for Twitter’s user milestone. The projection of the figure comes from Twopcharts.com , a third party Twitter analysis company. New accounts registered per second is constantly above 13 on Wednesday, according to the official countdown board . There are skeptics who challenge these figures. Twopcharts has noticed fluctuations with the Twitter accounts it has been checking while keeping track of the countdown to 500 million. In a blog post, the company states that out of 100,000 accounts it has looked at, many have been suspended or closed. Others are inactive, still showing the default egg profile picture. It’s disheartening to some that 53% of the sample the company is analyzing is inactive. SEE ALSO: Twitter App Updates Bring New Features for iPhone and Android Users “Based on a sample of 100,000 accounts that were registered about three months ago, one has to be very cautious to draw any general conclusions,” the blog post concluded. “It is however likely that from the huge amount of new accounts that have been registered in the last year, the statistics will not differ greatly from what we found here.” Regardless, Twopcharts is encouraging social networking enthusiasts to put on their party hats with a to-the-minute countdown on their website. A graphic also displays how many Twitter users have signed up in the past 24 hours. At 11 a.m. ET, more than 50,000-plus new tweeters were accounted for. What does Twitter have to say about these numbers? Twitter’s official page lists stats as 100 million-plus active users. At New York’s Guardian Activate Summit In April 2011, Twitter announced its user base in the 200 million-range worldwide. Katie Stanton, vice president of international strategy at Twitter, stated more than 70% of tweets comes from outside the U.S. Mfarhanonline has reached out for Twitter to confirm the report. Twitter announced on Tuesday that iPhone and Android app users should be expecting some updates that will expediate finding friends, better copy-and-paste options and a “Read Later Service.” Perhaps these improvements will help push user sign-ups. Let us know in the comments if you will be celebrating with virtual fireworks or do you expect a big Fail Whale in terms of reaching 500 million users. 1. Eventbrite Issues Its 50 Millionth Ticket
about 13 hours ago - No comments
Six-year-old online ticketing platform Eventbrite issued its 50 millionth ticket on Tuesday night. More than 40 percent of those tickets were sold in 2011, when the company nearly doubled both the number of tickets it sold and more than doubled the number of events listed the year before. Eventbrite similarly expanded across other metrics last year. It added more than 100 employees and $50 million of funding, opened a London office and made plans to launch its first translated products in French-speaking Canada, France and Spain this March. The company’s iPad app for selling tickets at events took its ticket selling capability offline for the first time. Meanwhile, the scope of events that use Eventbrite increased. Some events that would previously have relied on traditional ticketing, such as a Black Eyed Peas concert in New York City’s Central Park, instead used Eventbrite tickets last year. The Governor’s Ball Music Festival recently announced it will sell tickets on Eventbrite. Last year, the festival sold about 20,000 tickets. Eventbrite’s revenue is directly tied to tickets sold on the platform, as it charges a $.99 fee and takes a 2.5 percent cut for each ticket sold. Events on the platform that sell a large number of tickets are very good news for its bottom line. Eventbrite’s growth spurt has not gone unnoticed, and some have speculated that the company is headed for an IPO this year. In a ZURB podcast this summer, Eventbrite CEO Kevin Hartz answered that Eventbrite could launch itself on the market this year. “We have to continue to perform to very lofty expectations to do that,” he said. Google’s Safari Tracking: Here Come the Lawsuits
about 13 hours ago - No comments
On the list of things guaranteed to happen from Google getting caught circumventing privacy settings on the iPhone ‘s web browser, you can check off “lawsuit.” At least two people are separately suing Google, accusing the search giant of violating federal laws. First reported by Bloomberg , Illinois resident Matthew Soble filed suit in Delaware against Google, saying the search giant violated his privacy and the privacy of others by implementing a “secret computer code” to bypass settings on Safari , the default (indeed, only) web browser on iOS devices — the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. In addition, James Richar is suing Google in Kansas for the same reasons. Soble’s attorney, David Straite, told Mfarhanonline that he knew of another filing in New Jersey. “I know of three, including ours,” Straite said. “And I know there will be others.” The lawsuits allege that Google knowingly violated federal wiretapping laws and committed fraud by not disclosing what it was doing to the user. Soble’s filing goes on to say Google’s actions go against its settlement with the FTC, which subjected the company to regular privacy audits. SEE ALSO: Google Caught Tracking Safari Users: What You Need to Know Soble says the court should “permanently restrain” Google from installing cookies on phones or devices when such tracking is in violation of the law. Similary, Richar’s suit asks for a permanent injunction to prevent Google from “intercepting” electronic information from users who are not logged in to google.com. The lawsuits stem from the discovery last week that Google had bypassed users’ privacy settings on Safari in order to serve people browser cookies from third-party sites that Google operates. While Google says it was only trying to ensure things like”+1″ buttons worked consistently for users, the cookies also enabled Google to target ads to the users based on their behavior. However, Google says the ad tracking was a mistake and has halted the practice. That’s clearly not enough in the minds of some users, who have turned to the courts to punish Google for what they perceive as “wrongful conduct.” As more people sue Google, the courts are expected to combine all the cases into a class-action lawsuit (both Soble and Richar applied for class-action status) in the coming months. A Google spokesperson said the company had no comment on the lawsuits. More About: apple , cookies , Google , lawsuits , privacy , safari , trending
Apple in Shanghai Showdown for ‘iPad’ Name in China
about 16 hours ago - No comments
Apple defended its right to use the “iPad” trademark in China in a mainland Chinese court on Wednesday. In a David-and-Goliath legal showdown, Shenzhen Proview Technology, a fledgling Chinese electronics company, is suing Apple, claiming they never sold Apple the right to use the name of the popular tablet device in China. Proview, an LCD screen manufacturer, owned the copyrights for an “IPAD,” short for Internet Personal Access Device. Apple argues that it purchased that name from Proview for use in China for $55,000 through an intermediary company. However, Proview’s lawyer has claimed that the sale, which was made by the company’s Taiwan-based affiliate, was invalid. “Apple has no right to sell iPads under that name,” said Proview’s lawyer according to the Associated Press. Apple parried by saying that Proview violated the deal after failing to give Apple the sought-after trademark rights in mainland China. Apple also claimed that Proview, which is struggling financially, has not recently sold its “IPAD” in China and has no capability of doing so, voiding Proview’s hold on the copyright. “They have no market, no sales, no customers, they have nothing,” Apple’s laywer said of Proview. “The iPad is so popular that it is in short supply. We have to consider the public good.” The case was brought on by Proview in order to get Apple to stop selling iPads in China under that name. In an earlier case, a court in Hong Kong, which has a legal system separate from that of mainland China, decided in favor of Apple. A Shenzhen court located in southern China sided with Proview. Apple is appealing that decision and a higher court is expected to hear the case on Feb. 29. Proview has sought out help from local authorities around the country, and iPads have since vanished from shops in a few Chinese cities. But at many Chinese Apple Stores, customers are snapping them up as quickly as they’re put on shelves. The Apple iPad makes up more than 70 percent of tablet sales in the country. SEE ALSO: Apple Hit With 250,000 Signatures Protesting Labor Conditions in China The Chinese market is hugely important for Apple. Chinese citizens are just as eager to get their hands on the latest Apple technology as Americans, evidenced by quasi-riots when Beijing’s Apple Store failed to open on the morning of the local iPhone 4S launch. Despite this consumer craze, Apple has something of a tumultuous relationship with China. The company has recently come under pressure from human rights groups for allegedly poor working conditions at Chinese factories which produce components for the iPad and other Apple devices. Apple representatives were not immediately available for comment. What do you think of the trademark dispute? Does Apple have the right to the “iPad” name in China? Sound off in the comments below.
